How to Qualify a Coil Loop Insert Manufacturer for Precast and Forming Orders

A coil loop insert manufacturer should be qualified against one controlled product drawing and one intended use. Do not send a photograph, a bolt diameter, and a quantity and expect comparable quotations. State the insert style, mating coil bolt or rod, thread designation, geometry, concrete application, load directions, finish, required evidence, and sample-approval method. Ask every bidder to list deviations rather than silently offer its nearest catalogue part.

The name is only a starting point. It may refer to a plain straight loop, a flared shape, twin flares, or a coil that screws onto another component. Each leaves a different arrangement inside the concrete. Even when two inserts take bolts of the same nominal size, their coil profiles and working details may not agree. Length, wire position, welds, setback, and edge rules all need a separate check.

Name the exact insert family before requesting a price

Start the RFQ with the product family shown on the approved drawing. If the project is still at the comparison stage, describe the options separately and ask the responsible designer to decide which route will be evaluated.

Control the mating bolt and coil interface

The threaded interface deserves its own line on the drawing. “Fits a one-inch bolt,” for example, is incomplete because nominal diameter alone does not define the coil thread, engagement, tolerance, or mating product. Identify the approved coil bolt or rod by manufacturer, reference, thread designation, length, finish, and current drawing revision.

Ask the supplier how the internal coil will be checked. The answer should point to an agreed gauge or mating-part method and a sampling rule, not a workshop judgment that the bolt “feels right.” State whether the inspection uses the production bolt, a controlled master, or another accepted gauge. Give the factory the concrete and reinforcement context

An insert is not qualified in isolation from the concrete element. The buyer's technical package should show the member thickness, insert axis, distance to edges and corners, reinforcement around the insert, nearby prestressing strand or duct, concrete condition at use, and expected load directions. It should also show how the insert is held during casting.

Review wire layout and weld definition on the drawing

The drawing should make the product repeatable. It needs more than an overall height. Show the coil position, wire or strut layout, flare, opening, bend locations, weld locations, reference datums, critical dimensions, tolerances, and any permitted asymmetry.

For a double-flared design, check whether the open area must clear reinforcing steel or prestressing strand. The factory cannot infer that clearance from a catalogue photograph. Provide the actual reinforcement arrangement and an agreed keep-out space.

Specify material and finish without vague shortcuts

“Steel, galvanized” is not a purchasing specification. Record the required wire or rod material, coil material, finish type, coating scope, and any areas where welding changes the finish. If stainless steel is being considered, state the required grade and the project reason rather than using “stainless” as a generic upgrade.

The useful question is not “Do you have QC?” It is “What will you check on this item, how often, with what tool, and what record will we receive?”

The final plan must match the risk and the approved specification. Not every order needs every possible test, while a safety-related or project-controlled insert may require evidence beyond ordinary dimensional inspection. Put custom requests through drawing and change control

Before paying for tooling or approving production, settle:

  • who prepares and approves the production drawing;

Normalize quotations before comparing unit price

Two offers with the same short item name may cover different products. Build a comparison sheet with one row for each requirement and make the supplier answer comply, deviate, or not offered.

Compare drawing revision, construction, mating bolt, material, finish, samples, testing, documents, packing, quantity breaks, tooling, delivery term, destination, and date. Separate stock from made-to-order parts.

Include setting accessories and inspection. A low insert price is misleading if bolts, cones, gauges, tests, protection, or special packing sit outside the quote.

Coils and projecting wire can be distorted when parts move inside a carton or crate. Agree pack quantity, separation, container strength, corrosion protection, labels, pallet arrangement, and storage instructions.

The label should identify at least the buyer item, supplier item, drawing revision, quantity, and traceable lot as required by the order. Mixed items need positive separation. Do not rely on colour alone where a wrong insert could still fit into the same storage bin.

Can coil inserts from two manufacturers use the same bolt?
